Excerpts from a letter from our International Exchange Summer School Student (ODCS 2010)

Rianna Jackson
of Memphis was chosen to go to study dance in Canada with Ms. Karen Zissoff in August.

From the Dance Works (Memphis, TN) newsletter (excerpt)
"The experience I had in Canada was good and challenging. My first challenge was living with a family I had never met before. I thought they were not going to like me or the other way around. As days went by we finally talked to each other and built a small friendship that I was hoping to keep growing. I thank Mrs. Eaton, Amelia and Mr. Britton for taking care of me, as their child. There was no other family I would have liked to be with.

My second challenge was going to a studio full of talented girls that I didn’t know. My first day there was hard work. I was trying to show my love for dance and prove that I could be the best. At first I envied the girls that were in the pointe shoes. I felt as if I was good enough. As the pointe class went on I was glad I did not have pointe shoes. I loved the dance teachers there. They helped me accomplish a lot of old and new things. I actually stuck the releve fifth, frappe, the glisse and tendus and grands battements in several positions. I was also in the front row for the adagio, the character dance, and I had a small solo in the broad way class. - Rianna Jackson"

ODCS and Dance Works, Memphis, Tennessee have participated in this International student exchange program at each respective Intensive Summer School Programs since 1991. Many students who have participated are now performing professionally or in Dance-related careers.
